Am 26. April ist die Kunsttheoretikerin Marina Vishmidt nach schwerer Krankheit verstorben. Zuletzt war sie an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien Professorin. Bekannt wurde Vishmidt mit ihren präzisen Analysen der Kunstwelt, in denen sie die Verbindungen zwischen Kunst, Arbeit und Wert in den Blick nahm und so unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Bedeutung der Entgrenzung von Finanzmärkten und deren wachsenden Einfluss auf die Subjektivierung im künstlerischen Feld richtete. Das führte sie auch zu dem Versuch, neue Kritikformen auf der Höhe der Zeit zu entwickeln, etwa indem sie die zunehmend zahnlos gewordene Institutionenkritik durch eine Kritik der Infrastruktur ergänzte. Zwei Texte Vishmidts sind in Büchern der August Akademie erschienen: »Plastic Givens, Hard Stops. A Short Overview of Forms and Forces of Negation in Recent and Historical Art«, gemeinsam mit Anthony Iles verfasst, und »Art, Value, Subjects, Reasons. Some Aspects of Speculation as Production«. Beide verdeutlichen auf unterschiedliche Weise außerdem die große Bedeutung, die Vishmidt in ihrer eigenen Praxis der intellektuellen und politischen Zusammenarbeit eingeräumt hat. Wir haben uns deshalb gemeinsam mit den Herausgebern Peer Illner bzw. Simon Baier und Markus Klammer entschlossen, die Bücher »Unworking« (2021) und »Aesthetics of Equivalence« (2023) in den Open Access zu stellen – auf dass Vishmidts Gedanken frei ihr Publikum finden.
The art theorist Marina Vishmidt passed away on April 26 after a serious illness. She was most recently a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Vishmidt became known for her precise analyses of the art world, in which she focused on the connections between art, work and value and thus drew our attention to the significance of the dissolution of boundaries in financial markets and their growing influence on subjectivation in the artistic field. This also led her to attempt to develop new forms of critique in line with the times, for example by supplementing the increasingly toothless institutional critique with a critique of infrastructure. Two of Vishmidt's texts have been published in books by the August Akademie: »Plastic Givens, Hard Stops. A Short Overview of Forms and Forces of Negation in Recent and Historical Art«, co-authored with Anthony Iles, and »Art, Value, Subjects, Reasons. Some Aspects of Speculation as Production«. Both also illustrate in different ways the great importance that Vishmidt attached to intellectual and political collaboration in her own practice. Together with the editors Peer Illner and Simon Baier and Markus Klammer, we have therefore decided to make the books »Unworking« (2021) and »Aesthetics of Equivalence« (2023) open access - so that Vishmidt's thoughts can find their audience freely.
